Sustainable Business Program: Energy Conservation Measures

Below are some examples of items that would certify you under the category of Energy Conservation. 

The business can choose to certify in one or more of the categories listed.  

Facility (5 checkmarks required):

  • Schedule an energy use assessment with your utility company.
  • Replace incandescent and fluorescent fixtures with LED alternatives.
  • Rearrange workspace to take advantage of natural light.
  • Use “task lighting” to directly illuminate a work area.
  • Retrofit EXIT signs with LED alternatives.
  • Equip exterior lighting with motion sensor lighting in low occupancy areas.
  • Use weather stripping to close air gaps around doors and windows.
  • Utilize a shade tree near the building to minimize sun exposure.
  • Insulate hot water heaters and hot water pipes.
  • Add strip curtains to walk-in freezers.
  • Replace thermostat with electronic programmable thermostat.
  • Adjust equipment control settings to use less energy.
  • Use an energy management software system to control light and HVAC.
  • Select Energy Star appliances when available.
  • Utilize solar energy sources/equipment (I.E. solar water heater)
  • Install electric vehicle charging stations (level 2).
  • Replace/supplement existing AC system with an evaporative cooler or unit with high EER rating.
  • Replace gas HVAC heating with alternative using electric heat pump solution.
  • Install a “cool roof” coating on roof.
  • Inspect and maintain AC economizer operation.
  • Replace gas-fired commercial cooking equipment with efficient ENERGY STAR electric equipment.
  • Replace gas-fired clothes dryer with electric heat pump solutions.
  • Replace gas-swimming pool heater with electric pump clothes dryer.
  • Participate in SMUD’s PowerDirect© Automated Demand Response Program.
  • Install solar carports to generate power and shade cars.

Practices (5 checkmarks required):

  • Clean lighting fixtures and lamps monthly.
  • Turn off lights and remove extra lamps where possible.
  • Shut off computers or put in sleep mode when not in use.
  • Set refrigerator temperature at a maximum of 38F, freezer between 0-5F.
  • Use small fans and heaters during off hours in lieu of AC.
  • Routinely close blinds and curtains to reduce heat gain.
  • Routinely review utility bill or other energy use tools provided by local utility to track usage.
  • Seal off unused areas and insulate unneeded windows.
  • Use lighting control devices (time clocks, photocells, and sensors).
  • Use advanced power strips at workstations.
  • Schedule janitorial services during the day (instead of night).
  • Perform routine maintenance on HVAC system-clean permanent filters with mild detergents every 3 months. Keep condenser coils free of dust and lint.
  • HVAC- Check system each year for coolant and air leaks, clogs, and obstructions of air intake vents annually.
  • Provide reminders for employees or guests to turn off lights.
  • Drain and flush hot water tanks to the sanitary sewer every 6 months.
  • Thermostat programs are updated with occupied and unoccupied periods.
  • Sacramento County: In lieu of choosing 10 Energy Conservation measures, you may satisfy the requirements of this section through participating in SMUD’s Greenergy program.
