Sustainable Business Program: Pollution Prevention

Below are some examples of items that would certify you under the category of Pollution Prevention. 

The business can choose to certify in one or more of the categories listed. 

Facility (5 checkmarks required): 

  • Provide posting or education on proper Fats, Oils and Grease disposal. 
  • Provide posting or education on proper Hazardous Materials or Waste disposal. 
  • Provide posting or education on keeping dumpster lids closed. 
  • Provide posting or education on proper liquid waste disposal. 
  • Provide posting or education on storm drain protection (no dumping). 
  • Maintain vehicles utilized for conducting business. Routinely check for oil leaks.  Install a grease trap at your facility. 
  • Provide storm drain protection devices on hand for quick spill response. 
  • Provide secondary containment around liquids stored outdoors to capture spills or leaks. 
  • Provide chalkboard or whiteboard with VOC free water-based markers. 
  • Replace mercury containing equipment with non-mercury alternative (thermometer, thermostat, and gauges). Properly dispose of mercury equipment as Hazardous Waste. 
  • Utilize physical barriers to vermin harborage (IE: door sweep, seal gaps cracks and crevices to exterior). 

Practices (5 checkmarks required):

  • Regularly clean litter from surrounding facility.
  • Provide adequate ash trays for cigarette debris.
  • Purchase paper products (towels, napkins, and copy paper) that are unbleached (no chlorine).
  • Routinely clean dumpster area. Dispose of spent wastewater appropriately.
  • Use few multipurpose cleaners.
  • Inspect, clean, and maintain private storm drains annually before the first rain.
  • Provide educational materials on stormwater pollution prevention.
  • Limit hazardous products to authorized personnel.
  • Purchase smaller quantities of hazardous materials.
  • Reuse or recycle leftover paint.
  • Store deliveries, supplies and equipment kept outdoors under a roof/cover.
  • Use rechargeable/recyclable batteries in appliances (small vacuum or flashlight).
  • Provide janitorial service that utilize safe, less toxic products.
  • Use certified Ecowise structural pesticide applicator.
  • Use certified “green gardener” for landscaping maintenance.
  • Sacramento County: Use a Clean water Business Partner carpet cleaner, landscaper or mobile power washer.
  • Participate in local storm drain marketing.
  • Participate in local “adopt a waterway or open space” program.
  • Participate in local “adopt a storm drain” program.
